🎾 Development Course - Day 9 🎾
How representative is your coaching? The closer the practice court looks and feels to the match court, the more likely it is that skills will transfer from one context to the other. 💪
❌ don’t break apart perception and action
✅ Keep them coupled
❌ don’t decompose practice tasks into isolated movements
✅ think of ways to tweak and scale them to retain information sources and the emergence of functional movement
❌ don’t practice unopposed
✅ having an opponent changes what a player perceives and how they act
Thanks @the_coachinglab for inviting me to watch a training session and discuss all things coaching with the staff at Subiaco Lions.
Some of the key takeaways:
🏉 The team values and behaviours were front and centre, from the moment I walked through the door, to the last minute of practice. It wasn’t just window-dressing. It was who they were on and off the pitch. The more they exhibited those values the better the performance.
🏉 Decision-making is a key area to develop for tennis players and footy players. We have to help players attune to the relevant information the competition environment to improve their decision-making under pressure. What they are attuned to will depend on their intention. Intention and attention are closely linked.
🏉 We can learn so much from other sports and apply those different approaches within our own context.
🎾 Red stage assessment day 🎾
Encouraging to see how much progress the coaches have made from day 1 to day 8 of the development course.
Assessment highlights included:
✅ clear, relevant tactical and technical objectives 📊
✅ within practices that looked and felt like tennis 🎾
✅ performed by smiling tennis players 😄
🎾 Development Coach Course - Day 7 🎾
Today the coaches explored conflict resolution in realistic role play scenarios, followed by inclusive coaching.
Thanks to @d_augustin for dropping in and sharing his extensive experience and practical tips as a coach delivering inclusive tennis programs in WA 👏🏻

🎾 Development course - Day 5 🎾
Tennis is a game of thinking, moving, and striking 🤔 💭 🏃🏻♀️ 👊
The more you keep these elements coupled together in training, the more likely it is that players will transfer them to the match court.
Therefore it is important to design practice tasks that pose a problem for players, and put them in situations that allow multiple ways to solve the problem.
